Representatives from the various Utah Catholic Schools offer the intercessions during this year’s traditional 8th-grade Mass, celebrated Oct. 4 in the Cathedral of the Madeleine. Bishop Oscar A. Solis presided at the Mass. Concelebrants were Fr. Martin Diaz, the cathedral rector, and Fr. Joseph Delka, parochial vicar and diocesan vocations director. Deacon George Reade, chancellor, assisted. In his homily, Bishop Solis commended the students for bringing donations to the poor. (The baskets shown in front of the lectern contain a portion of the items brought by the students.) Seeing their donations, “it makes my heart jump with joy, how wonderful you are to remember the poor members in our faith community – the homeless, the sick, the addict and those who are in need. Thank you very much for understanding what the Church means – the Church is the symbol of the presence of God in our world and in our midst,” he said. “We do not see Christ, but the people see Christ whenever we do good, whenever we show love, compassion and mercy to other people.”
