During the annual Mass for 8th-graders in Utah Catholic Schools, the Most Rev. John C. Wester, Bishop of Salt Lake City, used the Sept. 19 Gospel reading (Lk 8:4-15) to remind the students that God has called each of them to help others. Why God has done this is a mystery, Bishop Wester said; “I can’t comprehend God’s will – I’m only a human being – but I’m sure grateful that God reveals it to me, and then my response is, ‘Yes, Lord, I will help you.’ Jesus Christ himself, the Word of God, the Son of God, is saying, ‘I need you. I need you to proclaim my word of mercy, and forgiveness, and peace, and love.’” As 8th-graders, the students should model Christ’s behavior because they are leaders in their schools, Bishop Wester said.
