Solemnity of the Holy Mother of God — Tuesday, Jan. 1 is not a holy day of obligation. In the Diocese of Salt Lake City, the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God has been abrogated.

Pastoral Center Closed — For the New Year’s holiday, the Diocese of Salt Lake City Pastoral Center will be closed until Thursday, Jan. 3 at 8:30 a.m.

Blessing of church renovations — Friday, Jan. 4, 6:30 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1375 E. Spring Lane, SLC. All are invited. A reception will follow.

Birthday celebration  for Mary Mendez, a lifelong member of St. Mary Parish and religious education teacher and DRE for more than 60 years. Saturday, Jan. 5, 6:30- 8 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 4050 South 3900 West, West Haven. The family asks that those who attend the celebration bring only their presence, prayers and well wishes for Mary.

Pontifical Divine Liturgy  with Ukrainian Catholic Bishop Benedict Aleksiychuk of the Eparchy of St. Nicholas. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2 p.m. at St. Jude Maronite Catholic Church, 4893 S. Wasatch St., Murray. The liturgy will be in Ukrainian. A reception with traditional Ukrainian Christmas Eve food will follow. All are welcome.

Eccles Organ Festival — Sunday, Jan. 13, 8 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, 309 E. South Temple, SLC, with Gabriele Terrone and the Madeleine Brass Ensemble. The performance will include the world premiere of “Preludio, Cantilena e Finale” by Fabrizio Callai, a commission of the Eccles Organ Festival to celebrate its silver anniversary. Free and open to the public.

Monsignor Benvegnu Lecture — Monday Jan. 14, 7 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Parish, 1375 Spring Lane, SLC. Fr. John E. Norman, pastor, will present “A Catholic Response to the Death Penalty.” Free and open to the public.

Mass for the Unborn and Ceremony of Light — Thursday, Jan. 17, 6 p.m., at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, 309 E. South Temple, SLC. All are invited to join Bishop Oscar A. Solis at the celebration.

March For Life Utah — Saturday, Jan. 26, 1 p.m. at the Utah State Capitol. Speakers include Angela Forker, Lindsey Tafengatoto, Hilarie Petersen, M.C. Rod Arquette, and singer Kelsey Edwards. Organist Needed — A volunteer organist is needed one hour a week on Wednesdays at 3 p.m. for St. Joseph Villa Chapel, 451 Bishop Federal Ln., SLC. Must be familiar with “O Salutaris Hostia, Tantum Ergo” and “Holy God We Praise Thy Name.” Please call Father David Trujillo at 385-775-5272.

Volunteers Needed — Catholic Community Services of Utah (CCS) is in need of volunteers at the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Hall. The property is safe with gated parking and two security guards. Annual Men’s Retreat — sponsored by St. Mary Catholic Church in West Haven, under the direction of Father Gustavo Vidal. Aug. 9-11, 2019 at its annual site in Bloomington, Idaho. The bilingual Spanish/English retreat, open to all men in the Diocese of Salt Lake City, will be based on the “Seven Deadly Sins, Seven Lively Virtues” study book by Bishop Robert Barron.
