Bishop Wester: "This very simple ceremony of foot-washing is deep with meaning. At the Last Supper, Jesus washes the feet, using this as a sign that he is loving and serving and forgiving always; it is a sign of his surrender of control, and it led to his sacrifice on the cross for our salvation. So this simple ceremony encapsulates all of Christ's preaching, healing, teaching, and ministry. We are followers of Christ, and he commanded us to do as he did. We are called to love one another, to serve one another, to care for one another. Saying yes to his call to think less of ourselves and more of others always leads to the Cross, but the Cross always leads to Easter, and that's what these days are all about."
