Bishop Wester reflects on the Gospel reading for the fourth Sunday of Lent

Friday, Mar. 28, 2014

Last time we reflected on the third Sunday of Lent and the theme of water, and I mentioned that there are many important themes in John’s Gospel, as well as in Lent. The other theme I mentioned had to do with light.

In the Gospel reading for the fourth Sunday of Lent, Jesus cures the blind man. It’s a long reading, and a complicated reading in a sense that there’s a lot of going back and forth – whose fault is it that the man was born blind, and things of that nature, but the key element here is that Jesus is the light of the world.

This harkens back to John’s prologue in his Gospel, that in the beginning was the Word, and the Word came into our world; he became one of us. He is the light that pierces the darkness.
