Blessed Sacrament Catholic School has a new crochet club + Enlarge

SANDY — An informal crochet club has formed at Blessed Sacrament Catholic School spearheaded by eighth-grader Sara Munzert, and Mrs. Kristi Oritt, eighth grade homeroom teacher after Mrs. Oritt noticed that Sara crocheted granny squares on a daily basis. She asked what Sara was creating and learned it was part of an service project that Sara is involved in. Mrs. Oritt, a crochet enthusiast, asked if Sara would like to teach other eighth graders how to crochet. And so, the Crochet Club was formed.

There is definitely a resurgence of this great American handicraft and the trend to knit and crochet has exploded in the area of American crafts and needlework. At Blessed Sacrament, the Crochet Club makes colorful granny squares to send to Africa, where they will be sewn together to form lap blankets and shawls for the ill.

Sara became involved with this project while attending Monday evening Confirmation classes at Saint John the Baptist Church. Her mother noticed a group, the Round Table Ladies, crocheting or knitting every Monday evening. She became involved with the service project and it didn’t take long for Sara to get involved as well.

Currently there are four members in the school’s Crochet Club: Sara Munzert, Julia Dushinske, Lindsay Cronin and Kayla Kremer. The Crochet Club is a wonderful opportunity where everyone can learn a new craft and at the same time provide a service to those in need.
