Cindi Vega, president of the Diocese of Salt Lake City’s Persons with Disabilities Commission, presents the 2019 Catholics Can award to Randy Duran, a Notre Dame de Lourdes parishioner. Vega is accompanied by her service dog, Pringles. Duran “is always ready to volunteer his time and talents. At fundraisers, his talents have included cooking, working the silent auctions, busing tables and helping with the games. He’s known for mowing the church lawn and even helped to replace the carpet a few years ago. Even if he hasn’t signed up to help, he’s quick to notice where there is a need and gets to work. Having a disability has never made a difference. There’s no end to his kind and generous spirit,” the nomination form states. The Catholics Can award recognizes people with disabilities who contribute to their parish community, as well as individuals, parishes or organizations that ensure meaningful participation by people with disabilities in Catholic parish life. The other recipient of the 2019 award is St. Vincent de Paul Parish and its pastor, Fr. John Norman.
