HYDE PARK — Francisco Hernandez, Jr. became the youngest person to receive the Diocese of Salt Lake City Catholics Can Award, which was presented during an Aug. 28 Mass that celebrated the contributions made by people with disabilities.
The Mass was celebrated at Saint Thomas Aquinas Parish in Hyde Park, where Hernandez is “an example in his parish community of the true message of service and hospitality,” according to his award nomination.
“Francisco lives with disabilities as well as a heart condition,” the nomination reads. “He is very active in this parish, welcoming parishioners with his big smile as they gather for Sunday Mass. Francisco also participates in the Prayer Group Ministry here. He joins in parish activities, including the Via Crusis, a two-mile procession, a challenge for even the healthiest among us.
“Francisco’s enthusiasm for life is clear in school and the community as well. He doesn’t let his disabilities keep him from being active. He loves soccer, and tells everyone that he wants to be a soccer coach. His desire to be healthy extends to those around him in other ways too, such as sharing nutritious recipes and talking about eating healthy with his family and friends. Francisco never settles for what others think he is limited to doing, but rather he strives to excel beyond his abilities. … How many teenagers do you know who go to diocesan retreats and serve faithfully in Parish ministry and activities?  All this despite surgeries and physical challenges.  He is an inspiration to all of us. As one person stated, ‘He is truly the face of Jesus to others, and a great example of the works of God’s grace.’”
Hernandez was unable to accept the award; his parents accepted it on his behalf.
The annual Catholics Can Award is presented by the Diocese of Salt Lake City Commission for People with Disabilities. The award “recognizes individuals who seek to include everyone, including people with disabilities in active parish life” as well as “individuals with disabilities who themselves are strong witnesses to their Catholic faith,” according to the commission.
The day’s celebrant was Father Fernando Velasco, pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, who at the end of the Mass called forward all those present with disabilities and gave each of them a crucifix.
Those receiving the crucifixes “are an example of how to live with happiness, with faith,” Fr. Velasco said. “My brothers and sisters, you are a great example to us. You keep us in your heart and you communicate to us hope, faith and strength.”
Before presenting the crucifixes, he asked those receiving them to remember that “you are great children of God, and you are so loved by God, and through you, God speaks to us. Keep us in your prayers. Your prayers are powerful for us. Your prayer is so powerful for the Church.”
