Diocesan administrator appointed

Msgr. Colin F. Bircumshaw has been named Administrator of the Diocese of Salt Lake City until a new bishop is appointed.

As diocesan administrator, Msgr. Bircumshaw has all the authority of the vicar general, the position he held prior to the new appointment. In addition, with the approval of the diocesan consultors, he may exercise certain other offices, such as calling candidates for ordination.

However, the diocesan administrator may not celebrate ordinations or the Chrism Mass.

The appointment was made June 9 by Msgr. Bircumshaw and the other the diocesan consultors: Msgr. J. Terrence Fitzgerald, the senior consultor; Father Martin Diaz; Msgr. Robert Servatius; Msgr. Joseph Mayo; Msgr. Robert Bussen and Father Kenneth Vialpando.
