Eighth-grade Mass + Enlarge

During the annual eighth-grade Mass at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, representatives of each Utah Catholic middle school brought forward gifts to the altar. During his homily, Father Martin Diaz, Cathedral rector, discussed the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. “We open our hearts to one another,” Fr. Martin said, adding that the students are instruments of God. “When you open your heart and listen to someone, when you open your heart and give what you have to help someone else, it is God who works through you,” he said, adding that the giving is important, but it is also important to recognize that by this action conversion is taking place in the giver, and “the more that you open your heart, the more you recognize that everything we have and everything we are is by way of a gift from God. … The challenge of Christianity is to understand the Cross and live that presence in the world.”
