BOUNTIFUL — Parents, grandparents, neighbors, big brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles and others gathered together for a Thanksgiving feast at St. Olaf School because they are special. Special, that is, in the lives of St. Olaf students, who wanted to celebrate and give thanks for these special people who have touched their lives in so many significant ways.
In past years, the Special Person’s Lunch at St. Olaf has been part of Catholic Schools Week in late January. However, it seemed more appropriate for students to honor their special persons during this season of the year when being thankful for blessings is so important.
Many extended family members traveled great distances to celebrate Thanksgiving with their families in Utah, so the luncheon is the perfect opportunity for students to invite and honor their special persons no matter where they live, and treat them to a traditional Thanksgiving meal of turkey with all the trimmings.
In addition, at the event the students have the opportunity to introduce teachers and friends as they enjoy their pre-Thanksgiving meal.
When asked who their special person is, students had various comments.
Milo, a second-grader, said, “My grandma is my special person because she is the only one who doesn’t work.”
Fourth-grader Zack remarked, “My dad is my special person. He’s been out of town for a long time, but will be here for lunch!”
Eddie, from the fifth grade, invited his big sister in addition to his parents. “She is special because she takes us fun places,” he said.
Ricky, also in the fifth grade, was excited to have his grandparents attend the lunch “because they take care of things when my mom is working.” He also was thrilled to invite his 18-day-old brother.
The Special Person’s Lunch is a day that gives the St. Olaf school community an opportunity to come together as one family based on love and thankfulness.
