SANDY — Science and math came to life at the second annual Family Math & Science Night at Blessed Sacrament Catholic School, on Feb. 10. The evening was overseen by the School Board and was a huge success, with more than 200 parents and students, in grades preK through eighth, participating. There were more than 20 hands-on activities, including experiments in chemistry with the creation of a gum drop molecule and chemical reactions with the making of goo.

The area of physics included stations dealing with Newton’s Law of Motion and the calculation of force and motion. Pennies floating in paper boats covered length and weight and plain water drops vs. soapy water drops helped to calculate volume.

"We had to balance two golf balls on top of each other for a minute and that was really hard. It was a good experience for everyone. Making goo was fun for all ages," said Olivia Bithell, 8th grader, who attended the event with her brother, Jack and mother, Stacy.

The Middle School Science Fair was held the same evening. Throughout the evening, parents and their students were invited to visit the displays and see the comprehensive math and science curriculum at the school. The evening ended with the presentation of the Middle School Science Fair awards. There were several winners in different categories. However, the overall winner was 8th-grader Amanda Sands, in the category of engineering with her project entitled, "Pulleys Making Work Better Through Easier Lifting."

"I am so proud of our students," said Middle School Science Fair teacher Jeanne Lindmar. "Each year, I am amazed at the increase in technical detail that the students put into their experiments. The quality of the experiments is definitely an indicator of the ever increasing emphasis that Blessed Sacrament School puts on the areas of math, science, and technology. I am looking forward to several of our students participating in the Diocesan wide science fair to be held on Saturday, Feb. 26, at Saint Francis Xavier in Kearns."
