Father Vincent Govorchin

July 15, 1925 ~ July 25, 2018

Father Vincent Govorchin, an incardinated priest of the Diocese of Salt Lake City, died July 25, 2018 at Saint John of God Retirement and Care Center in Los Angeles.  He was born July 15, 1925 in Chicago, Ill. to Joseph and Jennie Klarin Govorchin.  Following studies at Chicago seminaries, he completed theology at Saint John Seminary, Camarillo, Calif., where he was ordained by Bishop Duane G. Hunt on January 30, 1955.

Fr. Govorchin served 14 years in the diocese, as assistant pastor at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, Saint Ann and Our Lady of Lourdes parishes. He also was chaplain at Holy Cross and the Salt Lake veterans hospitals.  He felt hospital ministry was his special calling.

In 1969, Fr. Govorchin received permission from Bishop Joseph L. Federal to serve as chaplain at California veterans hospitals in order to be near family members whose medical conditions required his support.

The diocese is grateful for the care provided Fr. Govorchin by the Brothers of Saint John of God, the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles and by Monsignor Lawrence J. Baird, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Newport Beach, Calif.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated by Msgr. Lawrence Baird at St. John Vianney Chapel, Balboa Island (a Mission of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Parish in Newport Beach, Diocese of Orange) at 7:45 a.m. on Friday, August 3, with burial that afternoon at All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach, California, where his parents and sister are buried.
