1924 ~ 2018
Trappist Fr. Malachy Flaherty, the last monk to come from Kentucky to open Our Lady of the Holy Trinity monastery in Huntsville, died April 19, 2018.
Dom Malachy Flaherty was born in 1924 in Bloomfield, Ky. He entered Gethsemani monastery in 1943. He was a founder of Holy Trinity in 1947, where he made his solemn profession in 1949. He was ordained a priest in 1960. Dom Malachy was abbot of Holy Trinity from 1983 to 1995. At the time of his death he was 94 years old, had been in monastic vows for 72 years and 58 years a priest.
A funeral Mass was celebrated April 25, 2018 at the chapel at St. Joseph’s Villa. Burial followed at the Huntsville monastery cemetery.
