Once again I joined Monsignor Fitzgerald and Fathers Martinez, Ontiveros, Picos and Schwall for lunch during their periodic day of study and reflection. For more than four years Monsignor has been meeting with these “newly” ordained priests to discuss issues that pertain to their first years of priesthood. This program is designed to assist new priests in making the transition from the seminary to diocesan life. These meetings give our new priests an opportunity to reflect on sound theological insight that pertains to their experience in the parish. They have developed a great deal of trust between themselves and can learn from each other and from the vast experience of Monsignor Fitzgerald. I am grateful to Monsignor for his fidelity to this worthwhile program and I thank the priests for their faithfulness to the gatherings. This program underscores the importance of ongoing formation for our priests, a formation that helps them to serve our local Church with greater enthusiasm and competence.
