OGDEN –‘A Stitch In Time,’ the first annual charity event of the Give Me A Chance Foundation, was filled with laughter, dancing and good times, but most of all with a spirit of helping others.
The event took place on Sept. 12 at the Guadalupe Garden, which broke ground earlier this year behind GMAC’s Learning Center. Plans for the garden include a fountain and a gazebo.
The philosophy of GMAC is to “empower women and children through education leading to self-sufficiency.” So far, the program has trained more than 150 low-income unemployed woman in sewing and alterations.
“All of these women feel better about themselves, with a great sense of dignity and self-esteem since they have discovered their God-given talent that they didn’t have a chance to develop before,” said Daughter of Charity Sister Maria Nguyen, GMAC’s executive director.
The foundation also offers after-school education for children, family support programs and emotional support.
At the Sept. 12 event some testimonies from the trainees and children who participate in the programs where shared.
Leticia, who has been part of the sewing program, said that aside from helping her with her skills, she has been able to enjoy the center and have a great time there.
“And they have also helped my daughter [with the after school program,]” said Leticia, who requested that her last name not be printed.
Melany Arredondo, a young girl who participates in GMAC’s educational program, said that she and her sister had had a good time and really loved going there.
“I went to the summer program and I really liked it because I met new people and we learned a lot of things and had a good time,” said Arredondo.
Her sister, Vienne Arredondo, agreed, adding, “Everyone was very nice and I loved that I could make new friends.”
Maria Juarez, who has received the benefits of the sewing program, said that now she volunteers cleaning, cooking or with whatever she can to give back to the organization.
“I started my sewing class last year and  I feel very blessed to have GMAC in our community. For me it is an opportunity to grow. … My kids have come to the open school program and for me it is just wonderful. They [GMAC] are really helping our community,” said Juarez. “Thank you and God bless you all.”
Another story came from a woman who attends Weber Tech School and soon will  be certified as a nursing assistant.
“I want to thank the Daughters of Charity because they gave me a scholarship and now I can go to get my education. I am now going to be able to obtain my degree. … Thank you!” said Cheyanne, who asked that her last name not be printed.
Everyone at the event cheered and clapped as the testimonies were spoken.
The fundraiser event also offered raffles and silent and live actions, but most of all an environment of camaraderie and caring for the community.
“Give Me a Chance wouldn’t be what it is today without your involvement. Your support has impact not only on the organization, it has lasting impact on the lives of the women and children that come here for services,” said Sr. Maria.
