Immigration Talk in Cleveland

By The Most Rev. John C. Wester
Bishop of Salt Lake City

On Monday, Jan. 31, I gave an address to about 300 people in the diocese of Cleveland, Ohio. I was part of the all-day symposium titled “Faith Perspectives on Immigration,” which was sponsored by several ecumenical groups, including the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland. Bishop Richard Lennon and several of his staff were in attendance at this conference. We speakers tried to underline the importance of achieving Comprehensive Immigration Reform in our country and we also highlighted the great suffering that many of our brothers and sisters endure due to the lack of such reform and our antiquated immigration laws. We reaffirmed our commitment to and respect for the law but affirmed the necessity of achieving a new set of immigration laws that are equipped to deal with the immigration realities we face today in the United States. In the meantime, we lamented the fact that our country and our immigrants are suffering due to ill advised or poorly written laws that penalize those who are contributing so much to our society. For more information, I recommend that the reader go online to the homepage of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. There you will find links to the Justice for Immigrants Program which has compiled a wealth of information on Catholic teaching on immigration.
