Josephine Amelia Garavaglia Smith

SALT LAKE CITY — Josephine Amelia Garavaglia Smith passed away Nov. 7, 2012.

Smith was born July 15, 1917 in Heiner, Utah to George Garavaglia and Maria Cappelletti. After graduating from the Holy Cross School of Nursing in 1939 and qualifying as an RN, Smith moved to Reno, Nev., where she was chief surgical nurse at the Washoe General Hospital in Washoe County.

She returned to Utah in 1941 to work at the Summit County Hospital in Coalville. She married Weldon Verron Smith on July 18, 1941. She volunteered to head the Summit County Chapter of the American Red Cross for more than 20 years. She was recognized for her service by the Utah Federation of Business and Professional Women and received the Utah Lion’s Club Foundation Humanitarian Award.

Smith was preceded in death by her husband, infant son, sisters Antoinette Garavaglia and Jennie Garavaglia Hurska, and brother Vincent Garavaglia.

Smith is survived by daughters Sydney Ann Smith-Kee (Gordon Kee), Mary Denise Smith (Karl Hodges), Jenefer Ann Smith (Vern Sanders); granddaughter and many loving nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass which was celebrated at Saint Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church.
