Judge Memorial Catholic High School - Students excel in English Quest

SALT LAKE CITY - Judge Memorial Catholic High excelled at the English Quest competition March 5 at Weber State University. This year's team, under the guidance of Darin Hathaway, Michael Lovett and Linda Simpson, has continued the Judge tradition of winning major awards.

First place honorees are: Emily Andrews, Book Cover Design; Craig Domeier, Informative Speaking, Laura Lighty, Poetry Recitation; Alexandra Menzdorf, Story-Telling; Mary Morgan,Poetry Writing.

Second place honorees: Jenny Gardner, Literature Test; Isabelle Ghabash, Poster (had to focus on an element of language arts); Isabelle Ghabash, Vocabulary Test; Mary Morgan, Personal Narrative Writing; Marissa Novak, Editing Test; Chloe Ropner and Amy Ware, Reader's Theater; Amy Ware, Shakespeare Monologue.

Third place honorees: Sierra Brimhall, Literature Test; Jenny Gardner, Vocabulary Test; Isabelle Ghabash, Editing Test; Alexandra Menzdorf, Personal Narrative Writing; Marissa Novak, Vocabulary Test; Amy Ware, Poetry Recitation.

The Judge Memorial team included the following group of extraordinary juniors and seniors: Emily Andrews, Mackenzie Bachmeier, Patrick Boner, Sierra Brimhall, Craig Domeier, Maggie Fey, Jenny Gardner, Isabelle Ghabash, Sam Highsmith, Katie Hoskins, Laura Lighty, Victor Matonis, Alexandra Menzdorf, Mary Morgan, Mari Novak, Maria Rechsteiner, Lindsey Reemsnyder, Chloe Ropner, Megan Trentman and Amy Ware.

English Quest is a statewide high school competition in English/Language Arts sponsored by the Utah Council of Teachers of English. This is the fifth year in a row Judge Memorial has participated in this event.

In 2009, Bulldog students won prizes in Book Cover, Character Sketch Writing, Editing, Literature Test, Movie Trailer, Personal Narrative Writing, Photo Essay, Poetry Slam, Reader's Theatre and Vocabulary Test.

In 2008, 14 schools competed in the nineteen categories. Judge students won prizes in Poetry Slam, Poetry Writing, Poetry Recitation, Book Cover, Informative Speaking, Reader's Theater and Persuasive Essay.

Utah English Quest is a language arts festival designed to celebrate and promote all areas of literacy. This festival encourages and rewards Utah students' excellence in reading, writing, speaking, presenting, filming, drawing and acting. The contests showcase students' expression and expertise in their use of language and communication.
