SALT LAKE CITY — Kearns-Saint Ann School held its inaugural Multicultural Event on May 8. Kearns-Saint Ann’s is the most diverse school in the diocese; 26 percent of students are refugees. Among the 5th-grade students alone, seven different languages are spoken at home. “We are like a melting pot, a little U.N.,” said Shirley Redle, acting principal. For the event, parents cooked food from their native cultures and students created displays about different countries and researched information to draw pictures showing where they came from. The event also included Brazillian and African dancers. “We wanted the kids to have an understanding of other cultures, and we wanted the parents to come out. They don’t volunteer much, so we wanted a welcoming event to get everyone together and involved,” said Roni Peterson, one of the event coordinators. Father Michael Sciumbato, pastor, also attended the event. See more photos on the Intermountain Catholic Facebook page.
