ST. GEORGE — Approximately 65 men and women attended the Lenten retreat March 5 in Kuzy Hall at St. George Catholic Church. Fr. Adrian Komar, the parish’s parochial vicar, led the opening prayer.
The retreat featured Father Rick Sherman, parochial vicar of Christ the King Parish in Cedar City, whose presentation was titled “What it Means to Love.” His lesson was taught with humor, bringing laughter into the hall. Fr. Sherman asked the question, “How do we know we are loved and how do we love? We must always remember that God loved us first.”
Carol Drake, a member of the Diocese of Salt Lake City Stewardship Council and a St. George parishioner, spoke about the differences between volunteer and disciple: “Which one are you?” she asked those present.
Responding to a question about her vocation, Drake said, “God created me and called me. Who I am is because of God – I am nothing without him.”
Poncia Reed, a St. George parishioner attending the retreat, took Drake’s message to heart. “Discipleship should be a way of life,” Reed said. “By putting God in everything we do, we can be a disciple.”
The afternoon session was a presentation from Carol Hollowell, executive director of Switchpoint Resource Center and Homeless Shelter, which offers many services, including training, education, and shelter to those in need in the St. George area.
Two Switchpoint clients also shared their personal stories of overcoming challenges and how grateful they were to have their lives changed.
The St. George Women’s Group has chosen Switchpoint as a recipient of their fundraising; they plan to help build a playground at the shelter.
Dave Arndt, a member of the St. George Knights of Columbus, moderated the retreat. Music was provided by Dan Stricklin, a St. George parishioner and Knights of Columbus member, along with Kimberly Cook, director of the parish’s children’s choir.
