Matthew Huffman

Friday, Sep. 30, 2016

Matthew passed away Sept. 18, 2016 at home. He was 38.
He was born to John Earl Huffman and Jessica Ann Moravec on Oct. 3, 1977 in Gallup, N.M. During his early years, his family lived in New Mexico and Wyoming. In 1984, the family moved to Tooele, Utah, where Matthew went through elementary school, made his First Communion, and participated in soccer, football and baseball.
In 1989 he transferred to Our Lady of Lourdes School in Salt Lake City, then entered Judge Memorial Catholic High School. The following four years proved to be some of the most fulfilling years of his life. He played on the football team his freshman and sophomore years but realized he wasn’t a football player even though he loved the game and his teammates. With his true “Judge spirit” he chose to be the football manager so he could stay with the team. In his senior year he was chosen as Homecoming King and was nominated for the Christ the King award.
He went on to the University of Utah, where he was a manager for the Utes football team for one year. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 2004.
Matthew enjoyed music, but his greatest loves were Judge Memorial CHS (especially the football team) and the Denver Broncos. Two of his favorite memories were when he and his father attended a Broncos game at the old Mile High Stadium for his 12th birthday, and the Broncos and 49ers game he went to with his Uncle Jim Moravec at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
Matthew was preceded in death by his grandparents; his mother, Jessica Moravec Huffman; his aunt, Lynn Moravec Roberts; and his uncles William Huffman, Robert Huffman, and David Huffman.
He is survived by his father and stepmother, John and Carol Floyd Huffman; sisters Rebekah (Huffman) Uski (Dan), Chelise Floyd, and Monique Floyd Fitzpatrick (Glenn); brother Matthew Anane-Akorli (Emily); nine aunts, one uncle, six nieces, two nephews and many cousins.
The family thanks John Colosimo, James Cordova, and all the coaches and players at JMCHS who were so good to Matthew over the years, and to Mitch Lowe and Matthew’s other friends that he would lunch with on a regular basis. Special thanks to Dr. John Ryan and his staff, Dr. Angela Peters and Dr. Craig Selzman at the University of Utah.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 26 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Online condolences may be offered at starksfuneralparlor.com.
Donations can be made to Judge Memorial CHS in Matthew’s name.
