SALT LAKE CITY — In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Catholic churches in the Diocese of Salt Lake City have been improving their online resources to minister to people who are staying home to help prevent the spread of the disease.
As part of these efforts, this year’s Memorial Day Mass, which usually takes place on the grounds of Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, will be livestreamed from the Cathedral of the Madeleine, with Bishop Oscar A. Solis presiding.
Because the government’s restrictions and safeguards concerning social distancing continue to evolve, the preparations for this year’s Memorial Day Mass are still developing, said Ruth Dillon, director of the diocesan Office of Worship.
Nevertheless, the Mass is important, she said.
“We celebrate Memorial Day to commemorate those who died in the service of our county and to remember the sacrifices they made to preserve the liberties and freedom we enjoy,” she said.
This year’s Memorial Day Mass also will commemorate family and friends that have passed away.
“May their memories remind us of the love that God has for us and that one day we too will be welcomed into heaven with joy and gladness,” Dillon said.
The livestream of the Mass can be accessed on the cathedral’s YouTube channel, cotmtv, at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 25.
