As the Catholic Church in the United States celebrates National Vocations Awareness Week Nov. 3-9, the Intermountain Catholic takes a look at some of those in the Diocese of Salt Lake City who are living out their vocations.
National Vocation Awareness Week, which began in 1976, “is an annual week-long celebration of the Catholic Church in the United States dedicated to promoting vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life through prayer and education, and to renew our prayers and support for those who are considering one of these particular vocations,” states the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

What is a vocation?
The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines a vocation as “the calling or destiny we have in this life and hereafter. God has created the human person to love and serve him; the fulfillment of this vocation is eternal happiness. Christ calls the faithful to the perfection of holiness. The vocation of the laity consists in seeking the Kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and directing them according to God’s will. Priestly and Religious vocations are dedicated to the service of the Church as the universal sacrament of salvation.” - (CCC glossary, VOCATION)
Short Prayer forVocations
God our Father,
we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son’s Kingdom as priests, deacons, and consecrated persons.
Send your Holy Spirit to help others to respond generously and courageously to your call.
May our community of faith support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth and young adults.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
Amen
