Bishop Oscar A. Solis blesses the new statue of St. Therese of Lisieux during a celebration Aug. 14 at St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church in Midvale. Last year, an act of vandalism destroyed the statue of the parish’s patron saint. As news of the vandalism spread, donations came in from individuals, other parishes in the diocese and Juan Diego Catholic High School. With the donations, the parish purchased a new statue as well as new fencing, additional outside lighting and more cameras. “The vandalism to our parish broke our hearts, but Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, our patron saint, said ‘After my death, I will let fall a shower of roses. I will spend my heaven doing good upon earth.’ And that is what we have seen in this aftermath, a shower of blessings for which we’re grateful,” said Fr. José Barrera, parish administrator.
