Arthur David Varney

SANDY — Arthur David Varney, 72, died Nov. 22, 2010. He was a member of Saint John the Baptist Parish.

Varney was born Jan. 4, 1938, in Pittsburgh, Penn., to Martha and Arthur Varney. He was the District Marshall for the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus for the State of Utah. His passion was fundraising for children and those in need. Art was an avid Steelers fan.

He is survived by his wife Alice, with whom he just celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary; children David, Dianne (Paul) Ruffner, Lisa Bergles (Alex Antosik); grandchildren Thomas, Meghan, Kaleigh, Liam, Paul, Dan, Brian, Kristi, Phil, Ally, Mike and Niki; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers Charles and John Varney; and nine nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass was celebrated at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church. Inurnment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

John Rapson Wharton

SALT LAKE CITY — John Rapson "Jack" Wharton, 85, died of causes related to old age Dec. 2, at the Utah Veteran’s Nursing Home.

Wharton was born Jan. 29, 1925, in Salt Lake City, the youngest of six children of George and Lillie May Prout Wharton. He married Violet Ruga on Aug. 17, 1948, and spent the next 62 years showing the world how a husband should treat a wife. One of his many legacies involved giving Vi a simple gift on the 17th of every month.

After serving in the Navy in World War II, the South High graduate became the first member of his family to graduate from college. He played tennis and ran cross country for the University of Utah, where he later earned a master’s degree in education. He spent 36 years working for the Jordan School District, first as a sixth-grade teacher and later as a principal. His humor, philosophy and love of children influenced thousands in a positive way. He was a man known for sayings such as "one more time," "work hard so you can play hard, and "never grow old." Jack loved to travel, watching sports and mostly being around dozens of friends and family.

He is survived by his wife Violet, sons Tom (Nancy) and John Derk (Alicia) and daughter Lori (Nate); many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and students who all loved him for his sense of humor and generous nature.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Saint Ann Catholic Church.

John Lalor

BOUNTIFUL — John (Jack) F. Lalor, 89, died Dec. 8, after a long battle with cancer. He was a member of Saint Olaf Parish.

Lalor was born Oct. 12, 1921, in Laramie, Wyo., to Francis J. and Dorothy M. Lalor. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942 during World War II. He served in Seattle, Portland, New York and mostly in Alaska. He married Lois E. Martin on April 12, 1947 in Spokane, Wash, and soon after went to work for Kraft Foods. He later joined Power’s Candy Co. as a sales manager in Spokane, Wash. In 1960 he relocated his family to Bountiful to become a confectionery broker for a Seattle company. In 1969 he started his own brokerage and later turned the brokerage over to his two sons, Bill and Dan, before he retired in 1985. During his career Jack was recognized for the outstanding service he gave the confectionery industry. He was awarded as a National Candy Ambassador by the NCA in 1980 and inducted into the Hershey Hall of Fame in Hershey, Penn in 1996.

He was a faithful member of the Catholic Church. Both he and his wife, Lois, loved playing bridge with their many friends. He enjoyed a good game of golf with his friends and associates and the opportunity to travel. They enjoyed the few years they were snowbirds in Arizona with their new found friends. After the passing of Lois, Jack looked forward to the gatherings with family and close friends. He leaves behind a wonderful example of charity, service and a legacy of love to his posterity.

He is survived by four sons John (Luz) of Fairfield, Calif., Thomas, William, and Daniel (Jane), and his daughter, Anne Marie of Salt Lake City; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; sister, Myrna (Bob) Knudson.

A funeral Mass was held at Saint Olaf’s Catholic Church. Interment was at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
