SALT LAKE CITY – Taking selfies is a part of growing up in today’s digital world.  As tweens and teens try to form their identity, selfies serve as a way to test how they look and feel.

Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School sixth-grade teacher Mr. Hegvik recently had his class do a creative project using ‘selfies’ and asking the students, “What makes you feel amazing?”

The assignment included each student bringing in one or more selfies or photos answering the question, then writing about each photo expressing their own uniqueness and feelings.

The final piece of the project was creating a “Believe in Your #Selfie” bulletin board together as a class.

“As educators, the most important – and rewarding – part of our work is to recognize the vast potential within our students and to help them see it within themselves, and then supporting them in reaching that potential,” Mr. Hegvik said.

Mr. Hegvik stated how he enjoyed how open the students were with their feelings.  They learned about themselves and each other on a deeper level in a safe and accepting environment.

One student wrote, “I feel amazing when I do math.” Another wrote, “I feel amazing when I am in nature.” And another wrote, “I feel amazing for being at Lourdes a long time.”

The students loved the project and exploring their own potential and qualities to motivate and inspire them to become the best that they can be.

Anything is possible if you believe in your selfie!
