Bishop of Salt Lake City

We had a marvelous celebration of the Eucharist at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Kearns Sunday. This predominantly Vietnamese community welcomed me warmly as they presented me with twenty-eight candidates for confirmation. In addition, we welcomed in the Year of the Tiger, asking God to bless us and to grant us peace and growth in the new lunar year.

The Mass was very beautiful with fine music, liturgical dancing by the youth, strong participation by the congregation and the presentation of gifts to the newly confirmed young adults. Father Dominic Thuy is a fine pastor who never stops finding ways he can serve the people. He and his fine staff work very hard to ensure that the Liturgy goes smoothly and that the people enjoy the various activities of the day. I noticed that many of the candidates took the name “Dominic!” Father is having a good influence, I see!

After the Mass, we had wonderful entertainment from the young adults who sang, danced and helped us all usher in the new year. I then distributed “lucky money” envelopes to the children who were very polite and made sure they gave their “thank you’s” loudly and clearly. We then had a marvelous lunch as we extended the Eucharistic banquet and gathered around as a parish family to deepen the bonds that unite us and enjoy some very tasty food.

Father Thuy was also very gracious in welcoming for the first time Marie Mishel, editor of the Intermountain Catholic, to the parish. Many thanks to all in the OLPH community and to all, “Chúc Mung Nam Mói.”
