OGDEN —  On Oct. 21, 2008 the Most Rev. John C. Wester, ninth Bishop of Salt Lake City, dedicated Holy Family Catholic Church in Ogden. Exactly 10 years later, the parish will celebrate the anniversary of the dedication with a Mass and reception.

The parish began in 1979, when Bishop Joseph Lennox Federal and the founding pastor, Monsignor George Davich, began celebrating Masses at the County Club Theater.

Through the years the parish grew and, with the need for a new space, acquired the Alamo Storage Center.

On May 26, 1981, Bishop William Weigand dedicated the building on the lower part of the property as the social hall and temporary church. In 1982, when Monsignor Lawrence Sweeney was appointed as pastor, he acquired the rest of the property and built the parish center at the top of the hill in South Ogden.

Msgr. Sweeney remained the pastor until 2005, when Fr. Patrick Elliott was appointed as pastor; under his direction the church building itself was constructed.

In 2017, when Fr. Elliot retired,  Fr. William Wheaton was appointed as the pastor.

The Oct. 21 celebration will begin with a Mass at which the Most Rev. Oscar A. Solis, tenth Bishop of Salt Lake City, will preside.

Former parishioners who were part of the community while the parish was being built are invited to come to the Oct. 21 anniversary celebration and share their stories, Fr. Wheaton said.

“We want that, as a parish, we all come together and celebrate the accomplishment of building a beautiful church here in Ogden,” said Fr. Wheaton, adding that he hopes that the parishioners take this as an opportunity “to say we have a beautiful church, and how can we help to pay off this debt?”

The parish is $200,000 short of paying the church off,  Fr. Wheaton said.
