Singin’ Along! Madeleine Rice, Judge Memorial Catholic High School Class of 2010, recently graduated from the Berklee College of Music and is now on tour with a chart-topping Asian pop singer. She is the daughter of Robert Rice and Angela Rowland, JMCHS Class of 1981, and sister of Owain Rice, Class of 2014. 

In Uniform! Tommy Maddox, Juan Diego CHS Class of 2013, who became the first Soaring Eagle to receive an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy, has entered his second year at West Point. 

Papal Appointment! Edward J. Allam, Judge Memorial Class of 1979, is one of 13 consultors appointed in July by Pope Francis to the Pontifical Council for Culture for a five-year term. A professor at Notre Dame University-Louaizé, Lebanon, Allam also is director of the Council for Research in Values and Philosophy in Lebanon and the Near East, as well as the executing officer of the university’s Lebanon: Land of Dialogue Among Civilizations and Cultures Initiative.

Happy Anniversary! Earl and Mickie Bond of Saint Paul Catholic Center celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 31.

Playing in Europe! Judge Memorial CHS sophomore Foster Dennin spent the summer traveling Europe with the Blue Lake’s Fine Arts program’s International Youth Symphony Orchestra. A cellist, Foster was among the more than 1,700 students worldwide to apply for 400 positions within the IYSO; he spent nearly five weeks in France, Germany and Luxembourg performing under the direction of Michael Klaue, conductor of the Ahrensburg, Germany, Youth Symphony Orchestra. 

In the Lab! Judge Memorial CHS juniors Manny Condas and Tyler Rollman conducted research this summer at the University of Utah. Condas worked with Dr. Thomas Cheatham on computer simulations of complex bioassemblies;  Rollman worked with Dr. Adam Frost, completing research involving biomolecular spectroscopy on proteins.
 
Requiescant in Pace: In keeping with Catholic tradition, we remember the anniversaries of death for deceased clergy who served the Diocese of Salt Lake City, especially those whose anniversaries are this month. They are Father Thomas Butler, Sept. 11, 1966; Father James Fogarty, Sept. 6, 2013; Father Thomas Meersman, Sept. 22, 1991; Father John Sanders, Sept. 22, 1961; Father Joseph Valine, OP, Sept. 26, 1992; Deacon Aniceto Armendariz, Sept. 25, 2005; Deacon Raymond Ryan, Sept. 16, 1978; and Deacon Gerald Shea, Sept. 26, 2004.
