Welcome! Father Omar Ontiveros was installed Dec. 18 as pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Parish in West Valley City by the Most Rev. John C. Wester, bishop of Salt Lake City.

Making a difference! Three Judge Memorial Catholic High School parents were honored by the Utah Nonprofits Association and the Utah Society of Fund Raisers. Carol and John H. Firmage III served as honorary chairpeople for the 2010 event; last year, they received the Next Generation Spirit of Giving Award. Angie Matinkhah was a Heart and Hands honoree. This award acknowledges people who make significant contributions to a cause through volunteer or philanthropic service.

Top Recognition! Several Juan Diego Catholic High School students were recognized by the Draper City Council on Dec. 14. The Soaring Eagle soccer and football state championship All-State players, outstanding Student Body officers and Dominic Colosimo, who wrote an award winning essay to the United Nations, were honored. In addition, Mayor Darrell H. Smith signed a proclamation lauding the school for ranking in the top five schools for the 2010 United Nations NGO Positive Peace Award, and recognizing the school for several other achievements, including raising $25,000 in partnership with Draper City businesses to build a school in Africa, and for the more than 14,860 hours that students have volunteered in the community.

FIDDLE-Dee-Dee! Courtney May, Juan Diego Catholic High School junior who plays the violin, made the 2010-11 All-State Orchestra. This is the first time a Soaring Eagle student has achieved this honor.

Up and Coming Literati! Olivia Start and Anne Henkels, both juniors at Judge Memorial Catholic High School, had work published in the National Council of Teachers of English’s National Gallery of Writing. Start’s poem is titled "Younger Fears." Three of Henkels’ pieces were selected, two poems and a short story.

Gridiron News! Juan Diego Catholic High School senior linebacker Taylor Cassita was named the 3A MVP by the Salt Lake Tribune. Joining him on the All-State first team were teammates Nathan Elorreaga, QB; Jalin Ames, OL/DL, and Eric Doughty, DB. Named to the first team from Judge Memorial Catholic High School were Daniel Shiramizu, all-purpose, and Ben Cook, OL/DL. Among those selected for the Class 3A All-State second team were Soaring Eagle players Cody Berg, Trevor Greene, Eric Heinz and Oliver Weight, and Bulldog Matt Crispo. All are seniors.
