SANDY — Blessed Sacrament School 8th-grade students recently completed a week-long unit on robotics. They were trained on the RoboArm and how it rotates on five axes and, for flexibility, incorporates end-of-arm tools such as finger grippers, a shovel and a magnetic pick-up tool. The students worked in teams to move objects from one location to another. They were able to experiment, see spatial relationships, and create and solve equations. They had a lot of fun while learning the basic movements of the RoboArm. Team work and communication skills were key components in successfully moving the objects at a quick pace. After some practice, the students were timed and a winning team was announced. Robotics engages the students in their learning process as they "do" science and apply math. In addition, hands-on activities provide a wealth of opportunity for students to improve problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
