OGDEN — Saint Joseph Catholic Elementary School kicked off its Heifer International Fundraiser during Catholic Schools Week. This is the school’s annual fundraiser for Catholic Schools Week. Heifer International raises funds to provide impoverished countries with the material needed to improve the lives of those less fortunate. It is a global nonprofit with a proven solution to ending hunger and poverty in a sustainable way. Heifer helps empower millions of families to lift them out of poverty and hunger to self-reliance through gifts of livestock, seeds and trees and extensive training, which provide a multiplying source of food and income. More often than not, this is provided through livestock. Each day students were asked to bring in whatever loose change they can to help "fill the ark" of need. Students raised enough money to purchase seven flocks of chicks, seven honeybee hives, 48 shares of sheep, eight pigs, and four water buffalo.

A special thank you to Heidi Chudy, who was at the school every day for Heifer International and even dressed up in a cow costume and stood outside to show her continued support for the fundraiser.

Also, the school provided more than 10,598 food items for the Catholic Community Services Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank. Because the students reached their classroom food goal they received a "Crazy Hair Day" on Feb. 11. In the classroom competition there was a tie.
