ST. GEORGE —Fr. Martin Picos, pastor of St. George Parish, was presented with the Snow Canyon Scout District Award of Merit Feb. 11 for his support of Cub Scout Pack 4802 and the annual Friends of Scouting Campaign.
The Award of Merit is given to volunteers or professional adults for their service to youth.
In 1996, a proposal was made to the St. George Parish about organizing a Cub Scout Pack. This was the beginning of the Snow Canyon District Cub Scout Pack #4802, a non-denominational scout unit whose meetings were first held at the St. George Elks Lodge and later moved to St. George Parish’s Kuzy Hall.
The Snow Canyon Scout District, which offers a Cub Scout program for boys in grades 1-5, covers the cities of West St. George, Ivins, Enterprise, Santa Clara, Pine Valley and Bloomington.
Fr. Picos said he shares the award with all those who have worked hard to keep the district going, and he hopes it would be an opportunity to show that the Cub Scout troop is an interfaith alliance and community effort focusing on the work done by all faiths to promote scouting.
Fr. Picos also commended Jackie Comeau for her work as a liaison with the Catholic Parish and the Snow Canyon District.
Comeau, a member of St. George Parish, is the Charter Organization Representative for the parish and Cub Pack 4802. She said she is very proud of the work that has been done in the scouting district; she has watched the young boys start as new Cub Scouts, grow and learn, and then cross over to the Boy Scout programs.
“Working with the scouts keeps me young,” Comeau said.
For information on the scouting programs or volunteering, visit www.utahscouts.org/SnowCanyon or contact Jackie Comeau, 435-652-3882.
A sign-up event for boys in Grades 1-5 who wish to join scouting is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 28, in Kuzy Hall, Saint George Catholic Church, 259 West 200 North, St. George. At the event, parents will have an opportunity to speak with scout leaders.
