Sister M. Leonella Moe

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Holy Cross Sister M. Leonella (Pauline Ann Moe), 93, died Nov. 3.

Sr. Leonella was born in San Francisco, Calif., to Harry and Anna Schill Moe. She received her primary education from the Sisters of the Holy Cross at St. Charles School in San Francisco. She received her college degrees from Saint Mary of the Wasatch, Creighton University, and Fordham University, and her Doctorate in Education from Stanford University.

Her education ministry in the United States and Africa spanned 52 years, during which she taught kindergarten through graduate school. She served in elementary and secondary schools in California and Utah for 17 years, was supervisor of Holy Cross schools in the West for 10 years, taught college classes in Utah and Massachusetts for eight years, and was campus minister in Utah for four years. In 1979, she moved to Uganda where she was a senior high school teacher for seven years. Her last eight years in Africa were spent as the religious education advisor for the Diocese of Fort Portal. She returned to Saint Mary Convent in 1997, and was active in the ministry of prayer until her death.

She is survived by a niece, Eleanor (Don) Woodard; and a grandniece and grandnephew, all of California.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, at St. Mary’s Convent in Notre Dame, Ind.
