"We are appalled by the shooting at St. James the Just Catholic Church. Any violence against human life is reprehensible and even more so when it occurs in a place of worship.
"We are grateful to God that James Evans, who was badly wounded, is expected to recover. We also are proud of the St. James the Just parishioners, who in some cases risked their own lives while helping others at the Mass, and who have reached out to those most affected by the violence.
"The Diocese of Salt Lake City is working closely with Father Erik Richtsteig, St. James the Just pastor, in ensuring that counselors are available to those affected by this violence, particularly the children.
"Fr. Erik will celebrate a Liturgy of Reparation at St. James the Just Catholic Church on Thursday, June 20, at 6 p.m. This ceremony is a blessing for the church as well as for the people of God who are the living stones of the church, the Body of Christ. Just as the physical church was marred by this senseless act of violence so, too, have God’s people been wounded and stand in need of God’s healing.
"I would like to express gratitude to Fr. Erik, the St. James the Just parishioners, Mr. Brad Drake of Catholic Community Services and all those who are offering their professional services; they have been exemplary and even heroic in their outreach to those who have been affected by this traumatic occurrence.
"This was a terrible tragedy. We ask that all join in prayer for God’s healing for James Evans, his family and those who witnessed the tragic event as well, as the perpetrator and his family.
"I pray that the Sacred Heart of Jesus will be a source of healing and grace for all of us as we seek to move beyond the tragic events of Sunday. Our churches are safe places, and we will continue to celebrate in them without fear."
