SALT LAKE CITY – The annual benefit luncheon of the Catholic Woman’s League will be held Oct. 11 at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City.
This year’s beneficiaries are Race Swami and Consociates Auxiliary of Assistance League of Salt Lake City.
Race Swami, which teaches children to swim and also helps them with their homework, serves the Rose Park, Glendale and neighboring communities of Salt Lake City’s west side. Its goal is “empowering youth to be champions – in and out of water for a lifetime,” according to the statement page of the organization’s website.
Matt Finnigan and his wife, Mary Chris Finnigan, are in charge of the organization. Matt Finnigan is a former Judge Memorial Catholic High School swim coach and director of marketing. Mary Chris Finnigan was the Judge Memorial director of counseling and girls’ basketball coach.
Consociates Auxiliary of Assistance League of Salt Lake City assembles and delivers layettes for mother who are in need; they also put together kits for men, women and children who have been sexually assaulted. In May, the Consociates honored Linda Simpson and Evelyn Sadler of Judge Memorial Catholic High School as “Women of Distinction.”
During the spring the Catholic Woman’s League starts accepting applications for the beneficiaries of the luncheon; the applicants must be nonprofit organizations that operate in Utah.
After the applications are collected, they are presented at a CWL board meeting said Lydia Farnell, past president and present advisor of the Catholic Woman’s League.
During the selection process the organizations that submit applications do not do any type of presentation of the services that they provide.
“They just give a description in the application and based on that information, we make the selection,” said Farnell,.
CWL typically receives 10 to 12 beneficiaries applications each year, she said; after reviewing the applications, the CWL board members cast ballots to determine which applications will be selected for funding.
“Generally we pick two organizations,” said Farnell.
In addition to recognizing the beneficiaries of the luncheon, the event will include the traditional fashion show; Little America will provide the fashions, as it did last year, Farnell said.
Proceeds from the luncheon, after expenses, will go to Race Swami and Consociates Auxiliary of Assistance League of Salt Lake City, Farnell said.
The luncheon is open to the public; it is not limited to members of the Catholic Woman’s League.
“This is a fun time to gather with your family and friends. … Come see some beautiful fashions and socialize,” said Farnell. “You will be also benefit an organization.”
