Video, Facebook and Twitter added to the Intermountain Catholic + Enlarge
By Marie Mischel
Intermountain Catholic

For the past 20 months, the Intermountain Catholic has undergone a number of changes. Most obvious to the readers of these pages has been the redesign of the paper itself. We have a whole new look, from the masthead at the top of page one to the emphasis on local news.

What may not be obvious to our newspaper readers is that we’ve changed the electronic presentation, as well. Our website address remains the same, www.icatholic.org, but it also underwent a redesign that makes it easier to read and simpler to navigate. Just recently, we added video to the website. From now on, select stories that appear in our newspaper will be accompanied by video shot by our reporters. In print, a logo alerting readers to check our website for the video will be placed with the story.

The social media outlets Twitter and Facebook are additional venues for us to share what’s happening in the Diocese of Salt Lake City.

Twitter allows us to send short messages about news items, including breaking news. For example, when Archbishop Pietro Sambi, the apostolic nuncio to the United States, died July 27, the Intermountain Catholic tweeted the news. This is a wonderful tool to let Catholics in Utah know immediately about news of interest to them. Twitter is meant for tidbits; the entire story about an issue will appear in the newspaper and on the website.

The Intermountain Catholic now also has a Facebook page, where we will host photo albums from various events. Another advantage to Facebook is that it will allow feedback from readers.

All these different media are tools to allow the Intermountain Catholic to reach wider audiences, and to provide information in formats that the newspaper isn’t suited for. We hope you’ll like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and check out the video on our website.

The video links will be on our web page, www.icatholic.org, as well as our Facebook page, but you can also find the videos on YouTube by searching for icatholic.
