Grandparents, parents, friends, and other people close to students’ hearts were honored at a school luncheon at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School on Oct. 6. Almost 100 VIPs were feted with a great lunch, personal school tours, and a student art show. This year the event was blessed with 20 parent volunteers who helped with a myriad of tasks crucial to running such a successful show.

The school’s art teacher, Emily Beckmann, integrated the art show with student class work. Each class chose a student-nominated theme and then created art to reflect it.

Pre-K/Kindergarten: Autumn – Acrylic Leaf Stamps on Paper

1st Grade: Sports – Custom-designed "fantasy" sports team jerseys

2nd Grade: Grandparents – Acrylic on Canvas

3rd Grade: Nature – Multimedia cacti

4th Grade: Ancient Egypt – Watercolor Egyptian profiles with hieroglyphic sayings

5th Grade: Fireworks – Glue and chalk pastels on black paper

6th Grade: Sports – Watercolor depictions of favorite sports teams

7th Grade: Heritage – Oil pastels

8th Grade: Balloons – Acrylic on Canvas

Beckmann said that having students participate in the art show’s development creates more investment in their projects.

"The students had a great time working on their projects and developing their creative concepts from start to finish," she said. "They loved being in charge of selecting class themes, coming up with many imaginative ideas before narrowing it down to the final vote, and then cultivating their artwork for several weeks." The opportunity to show off those projects makes the show even more exciting.

This is the first year the school has sponsored a luncheon and art show. It was very well received and the children enjoyed showing their school to some of the important people in their lives.
