Bishop John Wester visits the Dominguez Escalante monument at This is the Place State Park in Salt Lake City Jan. 8. Father Franciso Atanasio Dominguez and Father Silvestre Vélez de Escalante became the first European explorers in the Utah Territory when they were sent by Pedro Fermín de Mendinueta, a Spanish governor, in 1776.
