SALT LAKE CITY — The students in grades one through eight at Saint Vincent de Paul School know more about sculpture and ceramics than they used to, and all students can see highlights of the liturgical year just by looking at the outside wall of the school. April 17 marked the official unveiling of “Four Seasons,” a mural in four parts, an art project created by local Utah artist Margo Bryan Petersen and the students themselves.

Bishop Wester reflects on first half of pope’s visit

SALT LAKE CITY — The Most Reverend John C. Wester, Bishop of Salt Lake City, was in Washington for the first days of Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to the United States. Bishop Wester was in the pope’s presence when he met well-wishers on the West Lawn of the White House April 16, then later that evening when the pope met with bishops at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. The next day, Bishop Wester attended the Mass at Nationals Park.

Head-on collision is teachable moment in Draper

DRAPER — The head-on collision between a car carrying two teenagers and another car carrying a mother and her daughter was not real. Produced by Juan Diego Catholic High School’s chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and the school’s television production class, the accident and the events that led up to it were broadcast into every classroom at Juan Diego Catholic High School. The Draper City Police and Unified Fire Department arrived at the school with lights and sirens blazing. They treated the exercise as if it were real.

Fund raiser for St. Therese Church brings music

The Utah Chamber Chorale, under the direction of Joseph T. Toscano performed a concert April 10 to benefit Saint Therese of the Child Jesus Parish, which is recovering from a January fire in the church. The chamber chorale, made up of men and women from various parishes throughout the Diocese of Salt Lake City, performed a compilation of works based on sacred scriptures. With pianist Donna Johnson and violinist Lyn Dobson, the chorale sang pieces from Mozart to the conductor himself. Pieces included selections from Mozart’s Coronation Mass, written in 1779, “Rosa Mystica,” the negro spiritual “Steal Away,” “Peita Signore” by Toscano, Jeanine Brady’s “Jesus Thou Art Mine,” and “Ombra Mai Fu.”

The Right to the Sacraments – Part I

In this article, I would like to examine some of the areas we face regarding the administration of the sacraments and, how the current canonical legislation illuminate our modus procedendi to allow practicing Catholics to receive the sacraments of the Church. The article is divided in three parts: Part I presents a brief introduction about the right of access to the sacraments based on Canon 843 of the current Code of Canon Law and the first area of analysis on how (1) the sacraments are instruments of sanctification. Part II will consider two areas: (2) the role of the sacraments in the Church and (3) the right of access to the sacraments by the Christian faithful. Part III will consider some of the (4) reasons for denial of access to the sacraments in certain times and situations. Finally, Part III will also present some conclusions.
