SALT LAKE CITY — The students in grades one through eight at Saint Vincent de Paul School know more about sculpture and ceramics than they used to, and all students can see highlights of the liturgical year just by looking at the outside wall of the school. April 17 marked the official unveiling of “Four Seasons,” a mural in four parts, an art project created by local Utah artist Margo Bryan Petersen and the students themselves.

Head-on collision is teachable moment in Draper

DRAPER — The head-on collision between a car carrying two teenagers and another car carrying a mother and her daughter was not real. Produced by Juan Diego Catholic High School’s chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and the school’s television production class, the accident and the events that led up to it were broadcast into every classroom at Juan Diego Catholic High School. The Draper City Police and Unified Fire Department arrived at the school with lights and sirens blazing. They treated the exercise as if it were real.

Lindy HughesEighth-grader wins awards

SALT LAKE CITY – Lindy Hughes, an eighth-grader at J.E. Cosgriff Memorial Catholic School, has been busy this year. She has been preparing for graduation, getting ready to enter high school, and winning awards.

In March, Lindy was selected to represent the state of Utah at the national Letters about Literature competition. She won first place in the middle school division with her letter to the author of The Book Thief. If selected as a national winner, Lindy will receive a $500 Target Gift Card and $10,000 Reading Promotion Grant for Cosgriff’s library.

DRAPER — Three Juan Diego Catholic High School seniors are models of the school’s mission. They have met and exceeded the challenge of their academic education. They exercise Catholic values and morals and have matured spiritually, intellectually, physically and socially into young adults.

Taylor Anderson, a senior at Juan Diego, signed a Letter of Intent with Snow College next year to play softball. She has received both an academic and an athletic scholarship.

Author, students study Emmett Till murder case

SALT LAKE CITY — Emmett Louis “Bobo” Till was just 14 years old when he was kidnapped and brutally murdered in the small town of Money, Miss. Till, an African American, had been visiting his cousins in Money from his home in Chicago, when he, in a moment of boasting and on a dare, whistled at a white woman, Carolyn Bryant. His torture and murder at the hands of the woman’s husband, Roy Bryant, and his half-brother, has been said by many to have been “one of the leading events that motivated the American Civil Rights movement,” said Chris Crowe, author of “Mississippi Trial, 1955,” a book of historical fiction based on the Till case.

Vinson Kashiwaeda named student council award winner

OGDEN — A sophomore at Saint Joseph Catholic High School won a 2006-2007 school year national scholarship award from the United States Achievement Academy (USAA) recently. The academy grants more than $100,000 in scholarships to USAA nominated students.

Vinson Kashiwaeda was recognized as a National Student Council Award winner among students from 37,473 junior and senior high schools around the country. He was recognized for his activities and honors as Freshman Class President, Peer Leader, Honor Roll, Key Club, and Daughters of the American Revolution just to name a few.

Senator Orrin Hatch and “Flat Stanley.”St. Vincent’s ‘Flat Stanley’ visits Congress, travels afar

SALT LAKE CITY — Senator Orrin Hatch helped teach Saint Vincent’s second graders geography and language arts by welcoming their world-traveling friend “Flat Stanley” into his Washington, D.C. office. Second graders were tickled pink to receive a photo of Senator Orrin Hatch with Flat Stanley in Washington along with a letter from Hatch. Katherine Kranz, a second grader at St.Vincent’s School, thought Hatch’s office would be a place they could learn a lot, so off Stanley went.

Blessed Sacrament students dive into science, reading

SANDY — Blessed Sacrament Catholic Elementary/Middle School students have had a busy and very eventful third quarter! On Saturday, March 1, several 7th & 8th grade students participated in the 12th Annual Knights of Columbus Diocesan Science Fair held at St. Vincent School. More than 150 students, from 11 Catholic schools from around the state earned their way to the event by winning their school-based science fairs. Winners from Blessed Sacrament are as follows: Carson Woodley, seventh grade, second place: Physical Science; Matthew Illario, seventh grade, second place: Behavioral Science; Alex Sands, third place: Environment Science; Anne Bailey, eighth grade, second place: Environment Science; Kris Kahl, eighth grade, third place: Engineering; Cody Pullan, eighth grade, fourth place: Behavioral Science. Anne Bailey was also awarded top prize at the science fair and won a telescope.

Students bring the Stations of the Cross to life

DRAPER — More than 1,000 students, teachers, and parents walked the Living Stations of the Cross on the grounds of St. John the Baptist Middle School March 19 and 20.

The eighth grade religion class performed their stations at least 50 times between the two days. Many were in tears because it is not an easy thing to watch.

Madeleine Festival of the Arts and Humanities announces slate of performances and artists

The 2008 Madeleine Festival of the Arts and Humanities has announced the events for the April 6 – May 11 festival.

The five member internationally acclaimed Calmus Ensemble celebrates the musical heritage of their native city Leipzig, Germany, in this evening’s concert of a capella sacred music.

Bishop Wester visits St. John the Baptist Elementary School

The Most Reverend John Charles Wester, Bishop of the Diocese of Salt Lake City, visited the classrooms of St. John the Baptist Catholic Elementary School February 27, followed by a question/answer session in the church and a luncheon with both the elementary and middle school faculty. During the question/answer session, the students asked many questions and learned things like: his favorite color is blue and his favorite hobbies are golf, hiking, playing the piano, and watching baseball.
