Saint Olaf kindergartners show their generosity
BOUNTIFUL — Since the beginning of the school year, the Saint Olaf School kindergarten class has been energetically involved in helping others, learning that serving those who are in need is a wonderful way to show that they are acting in a Christ-like manner.
Partnering with the Bountiful Lions Club by collecting used eyeglasses and sunglasses for worldwide distribution has expanded their giving potential to a global level. Read more...
High school author visits Blessed Sacrament School SANDY — American Fork author M’Lin Rowley visited Blessed Sacrament School, Sandy, Feb. 23. Rowley has signed a national book deal to write 10 books for her series, Knights of Right. She is a senior at American Fork High School in American Fork.
Rowley has two books currently in publication, “The Falcon Shield” and “The Silver Coat.” “Her third and fourth books will be available at bookstores April 8,” said Sonia West, Blessed Sacrament advancement director. Read more...
Judge students earn national recognition in German testing SALT LAKE CITY — Judge Memorial Catholic High School German students recently participated in the 2010 American Association of Teacher of German (AATG) testing with outstanding results.
Three students, sophomores Gabrielle Ghabash and Caitlin Gruis and freshman Julia Pynes, participated in the German II testing and scored above 90 percent. All three will receive a certificate of commendation from the National AATG. As Ghabash and Pynes speak German at home, they do not qualify to proceed to the finalist competition. Gruis, however, does qualify to move on to the finalist round. This will involve an oral interview in March to determine whether she will go on to represent the local AATG chapter at the national level. Read more...
Youth leaders prepare for northern youth rally OGDEN — “This was an awesome experience. I met some cool people,” said Rachel Damron, a 9th grader at Centerville Junior High School and a member of Saint Olaf Parish, who attended the Youth Leadership Retreat at Holy Family Parish Feb. 26.
Damron and 24 other high school youth were trained as peer leaders in preparation for the Youth Rally “A Leap of Faith,” held at Holy Family Parish Feb. 27 for students in grades 5th through 8th in the northern region of the Diocese of Salt Lake City. It included the parishes of St. Olaf in Bountiful, St. Rose of Lima in Layton, Christ Prince of Peace on Hill Air Force Base, Holy Family, St. Mary, St. Joseph, and St. James in Ogden; St. Florence in Huntsville and St. Thomas Aquinas in Logan. Judge graduate takes fifth in Vancouver Olympics SALT LAKE CITY — Zack Lund, a Judge Memorial Catholic High School 1998 graduate, closed out his 2010 Vancouver Olympics skeleton competition with a fifth-place finish.
Lund entered the final two runs of the four-run competition in eighth place, only 0.14 seconds out of third place with the third best time in the second run. After the final run, he missed receiving a medal by 0.52 seconds behind gold medalist Jon Montgomery of Canada. Martin Dukurs from Latvia won silver with a time of 52.61 and Alexander Tretyakov from Russian Federation won bronze with a time of 52.70. Read more...
Juan Diego senior wins Sports Faith International award birth mother considered abortion before deciding to bear him to term and give him up for adoption.
Now a senior at Juan Diego Catholic High School, Linton is a Utah All-Star wrestler – the first from Juan Diego to achieve this honor. He was a member of the 2009 state championship football team and went to state in wrestling two years in a row, finishing sixth this year despite a torn pectoral muscle. He runs a pro-life contest for Saint John the Baptist Middle School, regularly prays at abortion centers and has trekked across Utah with Cross Roads Pro-Life Walkers. Read more...
Judge Memorial girls win back-to-back swim titles PROVO —The Judge Memorial Catholic High School girls swim team successfully defended its 3A State Championship title at Brigham Young University Feb. 5-6. This was the team’s seventh championship in eight years.
The boys’ team finished fourth, with Oliver Diamond, a senior at Judge Memorial, named the Swimmer of the Meet for the second year in a row. He broke the school record in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.98. Last year he tied the record of 48.17. “I worked harder and got stronger this year with more intense training,” said Diamond. “I did more specialized weight training, core work and yoga. I had more experience and I figured out how to gain power on the wall.” Read more...
New program offers scholarship help for students SALT LAKE CITY — The Sponsor-a-Student program developed last year gives an opportunity for people in the Diocese of Salt Lake City to provide a Catholic education for Utah students.

Judge Memorial girls varsity claim Nike Tournament title SALT LAKE CITY — The Judge Memorial girls’ varsity basketball team claimed the Nike Tournament of Champions in their division. The tournament was played Dec. 27-31 in Phoenix, Ariz. The Lady Bulldogs won each game they played by an average of 25 points.
“We were happy to win and to show we could compete with teams from other states,” said Erica Martinez, a senior at Judge Memorial, who was selected as the division’s Most Valuable Player. Martinez scored 35 points and eight three-pointers in the second game against a team from El Paso, Texas. She had three three-point shots in the championship game, and scored 15 three-pointers during the tournament. Read more...
Saint John the Baptist learn the gift of giving DRAPER — Together the students of Saint John the Baptist Middle School decided that this Christmas they would help the children in the Christmas Box Houses.
The students just had one condition: All the items they gave should be new, and so each home base, as the classrooms are known, selected different items to donate to the project. Carrie Kafentzi’s home base was in charge of bringing hats, gloves and hand warmers. Read more...
To help build their school, they wrapped and wrapped TOOELE— A group of parents and administrators from Saint Marguerite Catholic School got together in order to collect donations for the school.
Marcella Burden, principal of Saint Marguerite, said that due to the fact of the financial situation the school is in need of donations.
