1875
In June, the first two members of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, Mother Mary Augusta and Sister Raymond, arrived in Salt Lake City.
In September, the Holy Cross Sisters established their first school in Utah: St. Mary’s Academy in Salt Lake City.
In October, the Holy Cross Sisters opened their first hospital in Utah: Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City.
In November, the Sisters founded their second school: St. Joseph School for Boys, which operated out of St. Mary’s Academy.
1878
The Holy Cross Sisters began their first school outside of Salt Lake City: Sacred Heart Academy in Ogden. In the early 1880s, they opened a school for boys on the Sacred Heart campus.
1879
In September, the Holy Cross Sisters opened their third educational institution in Utah, St. Mary’s School; and a second hospital, St. John’s Hospital, both in Silver Reef.
1882
The Sisters started three elementary schools. The first school was located in the basement of Holy Cross Hospital; the second was St. Joseph’s School in Ogden; and the other was St. Mary of the Assumption School in Park City.
1885
Both St. John’s Hospital and St. Mary School in Silver Reef closed after miners abandoned the community due to a drop in silver prices.
1891
The Holy Cross Sisters established Kearns-St. Ann Orphanage in Salt Lake City and St. Joseph’s School in Eureka.
1893
The boys’ school at Sacred Heart Academy closed.
1896
Holy Cross Elementary School closed.
1901
The Sisters founded the Holy Cross School of Nursing at Holy Cross Hospital.
1903
St. Joseph School for Boys closed.
1921
The Holy Cross Sisters opened Catholic Grammar School #2 in the basement of the Cathedral of the Madeleine.
1923
The Holy Cross Sisters started Catholic High School in Salt Lake City.
1926
St. Mary’s Academy was reorganized and renamed St. Mary of the Wasatch School, moving to the East Bench of Salt Lake City. The new school included an elementary school, high school and college.
The Holy Cross Sisters merged Catholic Grammar School #1, operated by the Daughters of Charity, Catholic Grammar School #2 and the Cathedral High School into Catholic Grammar School and High School.
1929
The Holy Cross Sisters started St. Joseph High School in Ogden.
Bishop John J. Mitty renamed Catholic Grammar School and High School to Judge Memorial School and High School. Holy Cross Sisters continued running the school.
1933
St. Mary’s of the Assumption School closed.
1938
Sacred Heart Academy in Ogden closed.
1949
The Holy Cross Sisters opened two schools. One was Our Lady of Lourdes School in Salt Lake City. Grades one through eight were separated from Judge Memorial School. Judge Memorial became exclusively a high school. The second school was the Cathedral School. St. Joseph’s School in Eureka closed.
1953
Kearns-St. Ann Orphanage closed. The building was transited into a parochial school under the administration of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.
1954
The Holy Cross Sisters opened their last educational endeavor in Utah: Bishop Glass Intermediate Learning Center in Salt Lake City.
1961
Holy Cross Sisters turned over administration of Judge Memorial High School to the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales.
1970
St. Mary of the Wasatch closed.
Cathedral School closed.
1973
Holy Cross School of Nursing closed.
1980
Bishop Glass School closed.
Sr. Joan Allem, CSC became the first woman religious to be named Superintendent of Utah Catholic Schools.
1990
Sr. Allem retired as Superintendent of Catholic Schools. Sr. Genevra Rolf, CSC was named as her successor.
1994
Holy Cross Hospital was sold and renamed Salt Lake Regional Medical Center. With the proceeds the sisters established Holy Cross Ministries of Utah.
Sr. Rolf, CSC resigned as Superintendent of Utah Catholic Schools.
1998
Sr. Catherine Kamphaus, CSC became Superintendent of Utah Catholic Schools.
2015
Sr. Kamphaus stepped down as superintendent.
2023
CommonSpirit purchased Salt Lake Regional Medical Center and changed the name of the hospital back to Holy Cross Hospital.
