1942 ~ 2023

Alfred John Evans was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on February 1, 1942 to Leonard Evans and Margaret Nagy. During the Vietnam War he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he met the love of his life, Amelia Vasquez.  They were married on July 31, 1964 in San Antonio, Texas.  They had three children Margaret, John and Catherine.  He enjoyed 26 years in the military experiencing assignments such as Taiwan, Guam, Iceland, Texas, North Carolina, Canada, Maryland, Utah and Alaska.  After retirement from the USAF, the family returned to Utah and settled there.

Over the years, John enjoyed fishing, rock hunting and geology, metal detecting and slot machines in Nevada.  He was a generous man, a peaceful man, and a person of great faith in God.  He participated in the Stephen Ministries that cared for the poor and hungry, was a Eucharistic Minister to the homebound, and shared in other ministries with his wife at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Layton.  After her death, he would attend Prince of Peace Chapel at Hill Air Force Base to attend Mass with his youngest daughter and her family.

Preceding him in death were his wife, parents and two brothers, Robert and Francis.  Surviving are his three children Margaret Nelson (Paul), John Evans and Catherine Yeager (Stacey).  He loved his family and spending time with the grandchildren Heather Hall (Devon), Justin Wixom (Amber), Chauntae Nelson, Madison Yeager, great-grandchildren Breanna and Corbin Hall, and Miles Wixom, and extended family.

Like his wife, he has donated his body to the University of Utah Medical School Body Donation program.  For this reason, a Memorial Mass was celebrated at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church on April 29, 2023.  A funeral Mass will be celebrated in the future when his cremains are returned by the donor program.  The burial will follow at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Salt Lake City.
