July 10, 1944 ~ July 14, 2025
Amalia H. Velasquez, also known as “Mayito” and “Grandma Mia,” 81, of Salt Lake City, passed away on July 14, 2025, at St. Mark’s Hospital.
She was born in Veracruz, Mexico, on July 10, 1944, as the 12th of 18 children to Tomas and Catalina Velasquez. The experience of life was her education, starting at the age of 12, when she held her first job. She quickly learned the valuable lessons of life through each of those experiences. She became an amazing cook and had a skill to work at different types of jobs, from soldering electronics to being a nurse assistant. She loved to sing and whistle, along with knitting booties, but the hobby that got her most excited was finally being able to make flowers out of bread.
Amalia is survived by her daughter Lorena Chavez; her two twin granddaughters, Victoria and Eileen; and grandson-in-law Alejandro. Amalia will be remembered for her strong faith in God, her kindness and compassion, and great love for her family.
A funeral Mass was celebrated on July 19, 2025 at St. Ann Catholic Church, 450 East 2100 South, Salt Lake City. Interment followed at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery.  Arrangements entrusted to Starks Funeral Parlor.
