SANDY – Music, food, games, a beer garden, and sweet shop were just part of the 23rd annual Days of Yore Festival at St. Thomas More Church June 8-11 on the grounds of the parish in Sandy. The three-day event also included a golf thournament and banquet, a 5-K run that drew 150 entrants, children’s rides, and home-made sausage by Frank Sida. Festival co-chairman Matt Lemelle was found June 10 at 10 a.m. running a sound check for musicians on the stage. The other half of the chairmanship, Amado Diaz, who was in his sixth year of mounting the Festival, said the event has raised as much as $40,000 over the past few years, with 10 percent going to charities. "Last year, the parish used a lot of the Festival proceeds to upgrade the parish computer system," Diaz said. "This is the second year I’ve served as co-chairman with Matt, and it’s been a great experience. He’s an electrical genius, and he’s hard-wired the parish plant to accommodate every venue we use to assure safety." Diaz said even a rain storm didn’t put too much of a crimp in the opening night’s events. "This year, we’re hoping to raise between $50,000 to $70,000, even with the rain," Diaz said. "We’ve been members of this parish since 1998. This parish is so generous with their time and their money. They have a great sense of social responsibility. I’s wonderful being a part of it."
