SALT LAKE CITY - The Most Rev.José H. Gómez , coadjutor archbishop of Los Angeles, was a plenary speaker during the 49th annual Study Week of the Southwest Liturgical Conference, held in Salt Lake City. The archbishop’s topic, which he presented in Spanish, was "The Eucharist as a Source and Main Focus for the Christian Life." In his presentation, Archbishop Gómez referred to the importance of the Eucharist in every person’s daily life. "We are all called to follow Jesus," the archbishop said. "That’s why the participation of lay people is so important in the life of our Church." The future of the Church depends on each one of the lay people, "because it is a great privilege and responsibility to feel that need to spread the Word," the archbishop said. Archbishop Gómez is a leader in the largest archdiocese in the United States; the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has more than 5 million people; 70 percent of them are Hispanic.
