SALT LAKE CITY — Artists from all disciplines are invited to create artwork reflecting the “Pilgrims of Hope” theme of the Jubilee Year 2025, to be showcased at the Cathedral of the Madeleine.
The cathedral’s parish council is hosting the event, which will take place the weekend of Feb. 14-16.
Strom Schiereck, a parish council member who is organizing the event, credits the Holy Spirit for the idea after the council discussed plans for the Jubilee Year. “After reviewing the Jubilee weekends schedule I knew immediately an event for the Jubilee of Artists … should happen,” he recalled.
He drafted a plan for the event and proposed it to the council.
“It is an excellent opportunity to share the love of our faith through sacred art, engage the community, and help kick off the Jubilee Year; a very special year,” he said.
Artists can submit work in a variety of media, including drawings, paintings, sculptures and cards. All the artwork should reflect the theme of the Jubilee Year, “Pilgrims of Hope.”
The artwork will be displayed in Scanlan Hall, in the basement of the cathedral, during the Feb. 15 social night and after the Masses on Feb. 16, Schiereck said. Parishioners will have the opportunity to meet available artists, purchase artwork, and “connect with fellow Catholics in a new way in the beginning of the Jubilee Year,” he added.
Displaying art that inspires hope, faith and the theme of the Jubilee Year may lead to a deeper conversion, Schiereck said.
“It is worth examining the balance of secular media and Christian media in our lives because it affects our faith,” he said. By showcasing Christian art created by the community, “I pray people recognize their ability to influence what this world looks like. It is important that faith, hope and pilgrimage be reflected physically in the world through artwork because it invites us to deeper conversion.”
He encourages everyone to celebrate the contributions of Catholic artists and their ability to inspire hope, faith and pilgrimage through their art. The Jubilee Year, “in particular, will be favorable to evangelization and conversion within and without the Catholic sphere,” Schiereck said.
