SALT LAKE CITY — Three Utah Catholic School bands came together under one roof to perform a variety of songs at the seventh annual Band Festival, held March 25 at Saint Vincent de Paul School.

Participating in the event were 85 band members from Saint Vincent de Paul, Blessed Sacrament, and Saint John the Baptist schools.

"It was a great experience to hear what other students are playing," said Kate Keil, who plays the saxophone at Saint John the Baptist.

During the festival, the students first broke into sectional (instrument groups) for a short rehearsal and were given a piece of music that they had never seen before. With a band instructor, students learned the piece and practiced with each other. After an hour they all came together for a massive band festival, performing for parents and the Saint Vincent de Paul student body.

"It was really fun, and there are a lot of talented bands here," said Caitlin Hegger, who plays the saxophone for Blessed Sacrament.

At the festival, each school band performed two songs, and for the finale the bands played two pieces together.

"I am grateful to Scott Larrabee and Saint Vincent’s for hosting such a nice day," said Fiona McGowan, the St. John the Baptist band director. "It has been great to see the students all create music together. This kind of event keeps them excited and keeps them playing."

Music not only contributes to the school and community environment but also encourages teamwork and cohesiveness, fosters creativity, individuality, discipline and commitment. It also is a source of joy and achievement.

At the end of the festival, Adrian Cloward, who plays the bass drum for Saint Vincent de Paul, smiled and gave a big thumbs up.
