Beal Frances Nielson

SALT LAKE CITY — Beal Frances Nielson, 91, died Aug. 9, 2010.

Nielson was born July 29, 1919 in Salt Lake City to Justin Elmer and Mary Frances Loveless. She graduated from East High School in 1936 and from the University of Utah in 1940. She married Reed Huntsman Nielson on June 1,1940 and they were married for 61 years until his death in 2001. Their first home was in Hawaii, where Reed was stationed. They survived the attack on Pearl Harbor with their infant son, Karl.

They moved often with Reed’s naval career, which ended with his retirement in 1964. Beal pursued her passion of teaching and taught in the Salt Lake School District for 13 years. She earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Utah in 1975. She retired in 1977 to care for her mother. She spent her life in the service of others.

She is survived by her children Karl E. Nielson and Rebecca L. (David) Anderson; grandchildren Daniel L. B. Nielson, Richard Evans, Justin Reed, Debra S. (Mike) Smith, Thomas Nielson, Theodore Nielson; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Saint Ambrose Catholic Church. Burial was in Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
